- The BCCI confirmed there will be no opening ceremony for IPL 2026, with the decision made as a mark of respect for the 11 victims who died in a stampede in Bengaluru on June 4, 2025, during RCB’s maiden title celebrations.
- A total of 173 players were retained ahead of the IPL 2026 mini auction, held on December 16 in Abu Dhabi, with 77 player slots filled using a combined purse of Rs 237.55 crore across all 10 franchises.
- As a mark of remembrance for the stampede victims, 11 seats at the Chinnaswamy Stadium will remain permanently unoccupied during IPL 2026, and RCB players wore jerseys bearing the number 11 during practice sessions ahead of the opener.
Why the IPL 2026 Opening Ceremony Was Cancelled
This is the story that has dominated the conversation heading into the new season, and it deserves to be told with the weight it carries.
The IPL’s opening ceremony has long been known for its blend of cricket, Bollywood glamour, and international entertainment acts, making it one of the most watched curtain-raisers in world sport. This year, all of that has been set aside.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the decision in an official statement, saying: “The BCCI is not organising any cultural or entertainment show at the start of IPL-19. As a mark of respect to the departed souls due to that tragedy on June 4, 2025.”
RCB had won their maiden IPL title last year, and to celebrate the historic victory, the management organised a free event at the stadium the very next day. Due to a lack of adequate preparations combined with an overwhelming crowd, a stampede broke out outside the stadium, resulting in the deaths of 11 fans.
However, the board has assured fans that the tournament will conclude with a spectacular closing ceremony on May 31, the day of the final, allowing the league to maintain its celebratory spirit while also demonstrating sensitivity and responsibility. So the party is not cancelled. It is simply being saved for when it matters most.
IPL 2026 Start Date, First Match and Schedule
IPL 2026 officially begins today, March 28, with defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru hosting Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. It is a blockbuster opening fixture on paper, and the emotional weight surrounding the venue makes it one of the most significant first matches in IPL history.
Josh Hazlewood has officially joined the RCB squad ahead of the opener, but the franchise will need to be patient as he continues recovering from hamstring and Achilles injuries. He played a pivotal role in their maiden title triumph, picking up 22 wickets in 12 matches.
The season runs all the way through to May 31, 2026, giving fans over two months of non-stop T20 cricket across 13 venues in India.

The Retention Rules and What Changed This Year
For IPL 2026, the 10 franchises were allowed to retain any number of players from their squads, with no upper limit on retentions. The auction purse for each franchise was set at Rs 125 crore, and franchises were deducted a specific amount from their auction purse for every retained player.
Punjab Kings retained the most players, holding on to 21, while Kolkata Knight Riders kept the fewest with just 12, setting up very different auction strategies for both teams.
The biggest shocks of the retention window came thick and fast. KKR released Andre Russell after 11 seasons and Venkatesh Iyer to gain Rs 64.30 crore in auction funds, while Chennai Super Kings traded Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to Rajasthan Royals in exchange for Sanju Samson. These were not small moves. These were franchise-defining decisions that will shape IPL storylines for years to come.
CSK released 11 players in total, the most among all 10 franchises, as they attempted to reset after finishing bottom of the table for the first time in their IPL history. MS Dhoni was retained, of course. Some things in the IPL are simply non-negotiable.
Auction Highlights and the Players Who Broke Records
The IPL 2026 mini auction took place on December 16, 2025, at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, and it delivered exactly the drama fans had been hoping for.
Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma became the joint-most expensive uncapped players in the history of the IPL when they were both bought by Chennai Super Kings for Rs 14.20 crore each. Two uncapped players. Same price. To the same team. The IPL never runs out of ways to surprise you.
Meanwhile, KKR secured Australian fast bowler Cameron Green for Rs 25.20 crore, making him the most expensive overseas player in IPL history at this auction.
Notable unsold players included Jake Fraser-McGurk, Jonny Bairstow, Daryl Mitchell, Devon Conway, Alzarri Joseph, and Gus Atkinson, a reminder that even big international names are no guarantee of a bidding war in one of cricket’s most ruthlessly analytical marketplaces.

Why This Season Matters More Than Most
IPL 2026 is not just the 19th edition of a competition. It is the first season after a tragedy that shook Bengaluru, the first title defence for RCB after their 18-year wait, and a season where franchises like CSK, MI, and KKR are all under pressure to bounce back after disappointing campaigns last year.
Traditional powerhouses Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, and Kolkata Knight Riders will all look to bounce back after struggling last season and have restructured significantly to return to contention.
Add in the continued debate over the Impact Player rule, with GT skipper Shubman Gill openly criticising it and saying it takes the skill out of the game, and you have a season that will be as much about off-field conversations as on-field heroics.
JioStar’s Star Sports and JioHotstar hold the satellite and digital broadcasting rights, so fans across India can follow every match on television or stream it live online. The cricket is here. The emotion is already in the air. And the closing ceremony on May 31 is already something to look forward to.
